Department of Youth Services - Holyoke District Office, Holyoke MA
I was to shadow several of the DYS caseworkers. When there were no trips to go on, I did office work such as filing and assisting the district manager and caseworkers with their paperwork.
I was given more responsibilities over time. I was given more time with the clients. I even got to go to the Boston Aquarium as a staff chaperon with the clients. I was partly responsible for the four clients we took with us.
I would rate my experience as excellent. I loved this internship! It was not only interesting and exciting but also very educational. Everyone I worked with was great; they treated me like a fellow employee.
I would recommend this site to other students because it was very interesting and interactive. The people are great. Some cases are hard to hear/see so I would definitely recommend being very passionate about being a counselor.
To future students I would say that the process of looking for/obtaining an internship can be lengthy and at times stressful and frustrating. However it is completely worth it. I feel like I have learned more than I have in any previous classes. Also a great way to network. I highly recommend it!
