The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts; Hatfield, MA

Job Role:
  • Executed special events
  • Managed multiple databases
  • Assisted in marketing/fundraising/social networks
  • Helped to create and develop third-party events
  • Performed general office work
  • Researched as needed
My placement was excellent in all aspects and I would definitely recommend it to my peers. The only thing I would have changed was that I was on vacation during both of the events I helped plan, I would have loved to have gone to them.

Advice I would give to students searching for a field experience is to apply to anything that interests them even if they do not have any experience. I went in for the interview with no previous experience and my manager hired me because I told her that I am eager and quick to learn, as well as enthusiastic about the causes we would be working towards.

Safety Net Outreach; Boston, MA

My job role was to
  • Shadow caseworkers, take clients to appointments/shopping etc
  • Call clients ans assist in providing emotional support for any stress they might have
  • Doing light case management work with the clients
  • Research different community resources available regarding health or financial information for clients
My placement was very good and other students should consider this site because it is so much more different to learn by experience rather than textbooks. You learn so much more and it helps you grow as a person.

The only thing I would change about this placement is my connection with my supervisor.

My advice to others seeking a field experience placement is to make sure that its something you truly want to do. You must be prepared for the good, the bad, and the ugly at all times.

Walt Disney World; Orlando, FL

My Job responsibilitities at the front desk included
  1. Check in/ check out
  2. Dealing with all guest situations
  3. Runner shifts and room deliveries
There were no changes in my job role over the time I was there.

I would rate my placement as excellent and would recommend it to other students because I think everyone who wants to work with resorts should have some sort of front desk experience. It is the main hub of the establishment and demonstrats how the resort is run.

If I could change anything I would have liked to have more responsibility such as concierge training.
My advice to others is to have an open mind, every experience is a learning opportunity.

Hawthorn Medical; North Dartmouth, MA

My job role consisted of observing and helping out the staff. I could not really do much because it was a non-hands on internship. However, my internship was excellent and I could not have possible gotten more out it. The staff was extremely helpful.

I would tell others pursuing a field experience placement that the sooner you do an internship, the better!

This field placement was excellent all around and provided me with top-notch experiences. I recommend this placement to other students, the personal interest from suppervisors of the progress you make helps to polish your skills.

If I could change anything about this placement i would have changed its location.

My advice for other students is to pursue a job with a business you like.

The Think Alive Foundation; Amherst, MA

At the Think Alive Foundation my I developed, planned, organized and implemented a preliminary marketing strategy. I also oversaw infrastructure improvements and developments. Over the course of the placement there were no changes in the primary job responsibilities.

As a whole i would rate this placement as a very good place to intern for. I would recommend it to other students since it was a great ecperuence and i felt as thoughi made a difference in a small organization. If i could change one thing about this internship i would make the struckture of Think Alive's involvement a little smoother.

Commonwealth Research Group; Mass Mental Health Center/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA

Primary job responsibilities: mandated data entry and cleaning, attended weekly grand rounds at the main hospital, and administrative work to assist two studies.

Everyone was very welcoming and eager to teach me how research worked.

Massachusetts Small Business Development Center; Springfield, MA

My primary job responsibilities were to support professional management consultants in a wide range of business sectors, conduct market research, and review business plans for clients, participate in counseling sessions with clients and prepare financial projections for clients including cash flows, profit and loss, and balance sheets.

My placement was excellent and I would highly recommend the SMDC to other students looking for field experience. It was an excellent place to be exposed to a variety of businesses from different industries with different issues. It is also a great place to network with experienced business people from the region. I got exposed to marketing, finance, and management at the small enterprise level.

If I could change something I would have liked more networking opportunities and business analysis similar to large entry level consulting jobs.

My advice to other students looking for a field experience placement would be to talk to everyone you are able to talk to. Start building and maintaining relationships because it will have a huge influence on how your career develops.

INTERPOL; Washington, DC

INTERPOL Washington, U.S. National Central Bureau  is located in Washington, DC, and is an agency of the U.S. Department of Justice and co administered by the Department of Homeland Security. There is no other place that under one roof has agents, analysts, and contractors from dozens of agencies such as the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, DEA, ICE, US Marshals, HHS-OIG, etc.

Interning here has been huge for me. Going forward, the possibilities are endless.
It has been an honor to learn from individuals that possess the knowledge, skills, commitment, intestinal fortitude, and rigorous thinking standards that are present within my division.  This combined framework is setting me up to skillfully and faithfully serve my country. I couldn't be more thankful and appreciative for this opportunity.

Crocker Farm; Amherst, MA

Interning here my job responsibilities were helping the children with their daily routines, implementing "tools of the mind" curriculum, and facilitating social engagements among children. As the semester went on, the amount of responsibilities increased.

I would highly recommend this site to other students. The people and the children are so great; I had an awesome experience. The challenge of my assignments as well as fairness of work load were great and helped me to learn a lot.

For future students, start looking early for internships, and do more than one!

Leslie Padilla Public Relations; Devon, PA

My job responsibilities were: compiling press lists, market research, and pitches and follow ups.

I personally had an excellent experience interning here, the atmosphere was great and I was able to learn a lot. However, I'm not sure that I would recommend this site to other students because I had a personal relationship with my boss Leslie and feel this placement might not work for most others. But overall, I was very satisfied with the job.

Women's Fund of Western Massachusetts; Easthampton, MA

My job role was to be present at every Grantmaking meeting as the official note taker. I conducted research on different ways the Women's fund could partner with various organizations in addition to just giving them grants. I created spreadsheets that recorded grant history, as well as current data about this year's grantee selection process. I contacted members of the Leadership Institute for Political and Public Impact about attending board meetings.

I would say that my placement was very good and would recommend it to other students seeking a placement because the staff is wonderful. They are attentive and very helpful and encouraging and made the atmosphere warm and pleasant.

If I could change something about my experience I would have liked to have made more site visits to the philanthropies but my schedule did not allow for it.

Behavioral Health Network; Northampton, MA

My primary job responsibilities were to
  • Shadow the support specialist staff
  • Shadow the case managers
  • Show the Speech and Language Pathologist

UMass Athletic Media Relations; Boyden Building

My job responsibilities were primary media contact for women's rowing and secondary contact for ice hockey and softball. I was also responsible for the generation of game notes, recaps & satisfied packages.

This was a great environment to work in. Supervisors are willing and able to teach you and help you grow to be able to take on greater challenges.

I would tell future interns to soak in the experience and embrace the challenges that are thrown your way.

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

Whitmore Admin. Building; UMass

Primary job responsibilities: monitor UMass Amherst 2015 Facebook page, post relevant stories/ events/ links on page, create surveys & data analyses of social media in the college application process.

Interning here, I learned a lot about strategies for planning and marketing which is becoming a prominent role in many modern day employment opportunities.

Advice for future students: talk with career services, go to the erecruiting page, and see if current internship opportunities can offer you an job.

Dept. of Comm. TV Studio; Herter Annex Studio

I was in charge of managing productions in the TV studio. I would meet with directors in pre-production meetings, design light, setting and sound, and was a technical assistant on days of production.

My responsibilities did not change during my time spent there but as I became more comfortable and better at my tasks, I was able to do more and more on my own, without help from others.

Interning here allowed me to get a good feel for working in a real live TV studio and I would definitely recommend this site too others pursuing a job in this field.

Dunn & Phillips, P.C; Springfield, MA

Primary Job responsibilities: meeting with clients, background research, preparing documents for courts/ judges/clients etc., office work, filing, answering phones, emails, scheduling meetings, sitting in on court to get a feel of what is it like.

Working here I received hands on experience that most places wouldn't offer to interns. It was completely worth the experience to see if you want to pursue law school or not and i would highly recommend this site.

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Fermi National Accelerator Lab; Batavia, IL

Job responsibilities: developing a software to be used in Radio frequency measurements of a cavity.

My exerpience here was great. I learned a lot and had great supervision and guidance throughout my entire internship. I would definitely recommend this site to future students.

Cisco Systems; Boxborough, MA

I began the internship with a project to familiarize myself with the team and the technology. This project had me consolidating virtual router topologies into a common space so that they would be accessible by all engineers.

My second responsibility was to fix TE team bugs-both applying past fixes to other release trains and fixing new bugs.

This was a great experience working with great people and I would recommend it to other students. I learned a lot, and got a feel about what it would be like to work there for real.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Deloitte & Touche; Boston, MA

Job Role:
  1. Provided the flexibility to serve the complexities of clients and understand the clients' business
  2. Performed review and audit documents, client operating procedures and systems of the internal control.
  3. Applied concepts of risk assessment, and designed and did tests of controls and effective audit procedures
  4. Identified accounting and auditing issues and performed research to solve the issues
My site was very good and I would recommend it to other students because Deloitte provides a dynamic working environment, helpful challenges, and the ability to network and meet new people with diverse backgrounds.
If I could change one thing I would have liked to have more intern events during the busy season.

My advice would be to network with as many people as possible.

The Eric Carle Museum, Amherst, MA

My primary job responsibilities were to assist my supervisors in both Marketing and Development departments with whatever tasks they felt would be most needed. This included drafting press releases, donor correspondence, tracking or membership and donations, upkeep of contact list database, and producing mailings.

With time my projects and responsibilities did become more important and significant and gave me more responsibility as an intern.

I would rate this site as average but would recommend it to others. Though it is slower paced than I think other public relations positions would be, it gives great insight to the world of PR and marketing on a national, and even global level right out of Amherst.

I think that if more clear directions and a set program were planned for the interns they would have performed better and the museum would certainly have benefited as well.

I would tell students pursuing a field experience placement in the future to be open minded. In the UMASS area in particular, students are required to be a little more creative when looking for internships that suit their skills and benefit their future. I have found that it was more important to have a position that used my skills, than to find ones that were the exact type of position I wanted to see myself working in after graduation.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette; Northampton, MA

During my placement:
  • I wrote articles that were featured in the paper for the features section of the newspaper
  • I had my articles edited
  • 10 of my articles were actually published
I had new assignments every week which were all different but my responsibilities stayed the same basically.

Overall my placement was excellent and I would definitely recommend this site to other students because it was a great learning experience and it was very different from normal school work, and much more exciting.

If I could change anything I would make it closer to campus.

My advise to others would be make sure that it is something that you love or else you will spend a lot of time doing something you do not really enjoy.

The Recorder; Greenfield, MA

I would cover local sports, do small writing jobs, cover games around western mass., write sports previews, weekly columns, and other small jobs around the office.

My overall experience here was great and I found it to be very relevant to my major. Everyone was always very helpful and always there to guide me.

I would tell future interns to ask a lot of questions and really take advantage of the opportunity.

Media Education Foundation Umass Amherst; Amherst, MA

Job Role:
  • Filming
  • Editing
  • Transferring
  • Compressing and Uploading lectures to course website
Nothing changed through the duration of my internship, I was told everything expected of me beforehand so there were no surprises.

My placement was excellent and I would strongly recommend this placement to others. My supervisor, Sut Jhally is basically a learning tree. The filming and editing also meant that I got to learn the material that he teaches, since you are there recording his lectures. In addition, the editing process is a very good skill to have and is extremely useful in today's world.

I would not change anything about my experience, and I would advise to not work for someone that does not have a structured plan for the internship. Planning is everything and helps the relationship and experience immensely.

Daily Collegian (UMASS); Amherst, MA

My primary responsibilities at Massachusetts Daily Collegian as the assistant editor of the Arts & Living section were to;

  • create weekly story lists to distribute to my writers

  • held weekly story meetings to assign stories

  • served as section editor on Wednesday meetings to discuss the section's status

  • worked as a writer, covering various Arts-related topics

As the semester progressed I was given less guidance and more freedom to solely design the Wednesday night layout. I also felt more comfortable hosting meetings with writers one-on-one to discuss their work and improvements they needed to make. I also had to ask for help less and less while working with InDesign in the graphics room.

This was an all around excellent field placement and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested. Working at the Daily Collegian provides students with experience that no class can compare to. You will face real life pressure, deadlines, while expanding your skills and knowledge in the field of Journalism.

If I could change one thing about this placement, I would have liked to have gotten out of work before 1am more often, but that goes along with the field so it is to be expected.

Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society; West Springfield, MA

Responsibilities;

  • Adoptions

As time went on I received more individualized responsibilities.

This is an excellent placement and I strongly urge others to take part in this experience if possible. This is a wonderful shelter where education, animal interaction, hands-on experience and much more are valued. If I could change anything about this placement I would make a paid position available.

My advice for other students is to work hard and put yourself out there. Ask questions and volunteer to do things.

Thursday, March 29, 2012

There were some changes to my responsibilities during my placement. For example, I had to train two new employees.

Overall I would rate this site as very good.

I would recommend this site to other students because the employees and residents are very nice and I gained important on-the-job experience, that only an opportunity such as this could provide.

One aspect of this placement that I would change would be Interaction with the R.D's.

Advice I would give other students looking to pursue an internship would be to create relationships with the organization and professionals who work in their desired field.

Working for Local Author; Amherst, MA

Interning for the author I would research publisher matches and edit writing pieces.
As time went by my responsibilities evolved with what steps the author was on in his pursuit of publication.

I would definitely recommend working alongside a writer for students interested in such a field. Its great to be involved in the process of publication as well as being able to meet people and get your own name out.

I would suggest learning to connect with publishers, finding out what they look for, and how they talk and meet new people while marketing their own names.

Corporate Automobiles; Amherst, MA

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Office management

  • Customer service

  • Marketing

  • Proposing a business plan

  • Performance evaluation and future forecasting

  • Any improvements that could be made for optimized performance

There were no changes to my duties during my placement.

Overall, I would rate this experience as excellent.

I would recommend this site to other students because it offered a great learning experience.

I would not change any aspect of this site; everything ran smoothly.

Advice I would give other students would be to make sure you choose something that you're passionate about, rather than what everyone else is doing.

Big Brother Big Sisters; Amherst, MA

At Big Brothers Big Sisters my main task was to advertise and find sponsorships for our big fundraising events, the "Bowl A Thon" and the "Daffodil Fun Run".

The environment was warm and welcoming and the staff is like a family and for the time that you spend there you get to be apart of it. The only change I would have made to this experience was to be able to be there longer! My overall experience couldn't have been any better.

For future interns, be reliable and work hard every second and you'll earn respect.

Bitfilms; Hampshire College

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Background and cleanup animator:

  • Finessing existing animation that had errors to it

There were no changes to my primary responsibilities while I was at my placement.

Overall, I would rate this experience as excellent.

I would recommend this site to other students because it was a great working environment and as an intern I really was part of the team.

Advice I would give other students searching for placements would be to get started looking ahead of time but also keep looking right up until the end. Sometimes companies don't even announce their internships until right before the placement actually starts and you can miss out on good stuff by thinking it's too late to apply.

Cooley Dickinson Hospital; Northampton, MA

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Shadow health care providers including intensivist, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner

There were no changes to my job responsibilities during my placement.

Overall I would rate this experience as excellent.

I would recommend this site to other students who would like to pursue a career in the medical field. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. You get to have hands on experience working with patients.

One aspect of this placement that I would change would be to have been able to participate more.

Advice I would give students looking for a placement would be to make sure you are given and complete the necessary paperwork ahead of time. • Recruiting interns for the spring

  • Training new interns

There were no changes to my primary job responsibilities during my placement.

Overall, I would rate this experience as excellent.

I would recommend this site to other students because it is the best learning experience, chance to personally develop oneself, very hands on and interactive. Best of all, it was not a typical buy coffee, make copies type of internship.

I would change nothing about this placement.

Advice I would give students is to find something that challenges you because that is how you learn and grow.

Crocker Farm Elementary School; Amherst, MA

Primary Responsibilities:

  • One-on-one assistance to some of the students who were under IEP's

  • Mini-lesson plans for those children in need of some informal speech therapy

  • Play small group games with children who were in need of further physical or articulatory assistance

There were no changes to my responsibilities during my placement.

Overall, I would rate this placement as very good.

I would recommend this site to other students who are interested in working with small children and who are in need of some guidance to whether working for children is best for them. As far as learning experience as a teacher, I learned a lot, but it may not be beneficial for those who are considering the teaching field as there is not as much structure and things to learn in comparison to a higher level classroom.

If I were to change anything about this placement, I would have appreciated more time with the specialists instead of being involved only in the classroom in order to get a feel of what the SLP, PT, and OT specialists do on a daily basis.

Advice I would give other students looking for an internship is to look in depth of what is to be expected of you. Although I enjoyed my experience, there are some field experience positions out there that are not what they claim to be. Although it does look good on your resume, it may not be worth it if you are not learning anything from the experience.

bp Magazine; Buffalo, NY

Primary Responsibilities:

  • increase traffic to website through social media (created blog, Twitter and Facebook)

There were no changes in my responsibilities, all that changed was the websites I would work on (I started with only a Facebook account).

I would recommend this site to other students because my supervisor was very friendly which was helpful when trying to learn how to market a magazine through social media.

One change I would make is more structure to their internship program.

Baroco Corp.; Hadley, MA

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Spend time with individual clients on a weekly basis

  • Give patients one-on-one time to be able to achieve specific tasks and goals together

There was a minor change to my responsibilities while I was at my placement. At first I was assigned only 2 separate clients but later was assigned another because she was responsive to myself and the one-on-one attention.

Overall, I would rate this placement as excellent.

I would definitely recommend this site to other students especially if they are passionate about going into the DMR/ID field. It is a great opportunity to gain some experience with the ID population.

One thing I would change is to have my placement involve some type of therapy or counseling experience.

My advice to other students is to be 100% positive that working in this field is what you want for a career. In order to be passionate about something, you have to like what you do.

Pompano Beach Club; Southampton, Bermuda

During my placement I was responsible for the Beach Bar, boathouse, the front desk, and also housekeeping. Once the busy season passed, the Beach Bar and boathouse closed and I had more responsibility with the front desk housekeeping. They also had me organize and clean various things.

I would rate my placement as excellent and would recommend it to other students because Pompano has a great work environment and I learned many more things than I would ever learn in a classroom.
If I could change anything I would have liked to been able to serve food as well.

My advice to others looking for a field experience placement would be to be very upbeat and enthusiastic at all times.

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

U.S. Business Development; Sagamore, MA

My primary job responsibilities were researching companies willing to trade with Canada and create an international market.

I was completely satisfied with this job and felt that my overall learning experience and relevance to academic work made this internship fit in perfectly with my chosen major. It expanded my knowledge of international trade.

I was able to learn all the basic information I would need to help in starting my own international trade consulting company in the future.

Quonquont Farm; Whately, MA

At Quonquont Farm, I was in charge of researching sources to advertise as well as caterers to suggest and items the farm could provide as gifts. I also learned how to give tours and answer client emails.

This was an awesome experience and a great place to intern because it was growing with me. It was a relatively new facility, so I was able to be apart of things from the beginning and because of this my suggestions really mattered.

To future interns, look for something you will truly enjoy, it not only makes the experience meaningful for school but it also makes it fun!

SPP, P.C.; West Springfield, MA

As an intern , I would prepare individual tax returns, as well as some corporate, s-corporate, and partnership tax returns. When needed, I also helped work on the books of some clients, using Excel and other programs to record adjusting journal entries and prepare drafts of the clients financial statements.

Working in a small office with many small business clients allowed me to see a business project go from start to finish, which I would not have had the opportunity to experience at a larger firm.

I had an excellent overall experience interning here. My advice to future interns would be to try and gain experience working at different firms because there are many different opportunities at both small and large companies.

CBS-3 Springfield; Springfield, MA

I basically shadowed my supervisor and was required to do my own versions of all his stories. He was extremely helpful and informative. He was also a great teacher and gave me a lot of insight into the broadcast industry!

If I could change one aspect of my placement it would be to have another semester to continue learning, practicing and gaining more experience. My overall experience was excellent.

I would highly recommend this internship. It was very hands-on training and looks impressive on your resume.

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Prison Birth Project; Amherst, MA

I was able to learn about women living in poverty and all of the social, economic, political, and structural reasons why they struggle.
I would rate my placement as excellent and would recommend it to others, especially Sociology, Anthropology, STPEC, and Economics majors.

I would have liked to have a little more guidance during my placement. I understood that the organization was new, but more structure would have allowed me to work more confidently.

My advice to students pursuing a field experience placement is to be prepared to do a lot of work and to be a bit self-directed.

National Geographic Television; Washington, D.C.

I assisted associate producers with carious tasks for ten different TV specials. My role included:
  • Research
  • Writing facts to be published online
  • Mailing packages
  • transcribing and logging footage
  • copying DVDs
Overall I had a very good experience. Though the work load can be overwhelming at times, it is a fun place to work and everyone is very appreciative of your help. There are also opportunities to meet with and learn from people in the TV department as well as other sections of National Geographic.
I would have liked to work in the production aspect of the documentaries, like film shoots for example. Unfortunately most of the programs were in post-production during the time of my internship.

My advice to others would be to apply for any and all internship positions that sound interesting to you. Prepare a concrete resume and cover letter that tells the organization what you can offer them. At your placement, try to meet with as many people as you can, make connections and stay in touch after your placement is over. Your internship will be what you make of it.

Easthampton High School; Easthampton, MA

Job Responsibilities:
  • Reviewing programs offered by guidance
  • Helping in after school programs
  • Creating statistics with information gathered from students
  • Observing interactions with students and counselors

If I could change one thing about this placement, I would work on the planning by creating a timeline detailed and organized as to what needs to be done, by when, and in conjunction with it's other requirements.

My advice for other students it that not everything you do will be fun, but think of it as a learning experience and learn everything you can from everything you do.
