Valley Advocate; Northampton, MA

Positives- wrote short blurbs and CD reviews and got to see my writing published in the paper each week. I got to write in the newsroom and received equal treatment in the editing of my work. Great!

My advice: Don't get all buddy buddy with these people. Do your work and have some initiative, and you'll easily be more productive than the people who work there full-time.

Jones Group Realtors; Amherst, MA

Job Responsibilities:
  • Administrative: make copies, compile buyer's packets, preparing listing forms, etc.
  • Projects: creating a client database, forming, updating client info, etc.
I would recommend this site to other students. The atmosphere was very friendly and the staff members were eager to help you learn/give projects.

Advice I would give other students about internships is to ask advisors for their advice/help instead of trying to find a placement on their own without any help. Also, do not sit back and hope that an opportunity will fall into your lap; make phone calls, set up appointments, and be pro-active.

UMass Magazine; UMass Campus, Munson Hall

Primary job responsibilities:
  • Fact-checked and copy-edited stories
  • Research
  • Participated in set-up of magazine
  • Wrote my own stories
I would recommend this site to other students because it is a good look into magazine work. I would not change anything about this placement.

May Institute (The); Randolph, MA

Nonotuck Resource Associate, Florence MA

Job Responsibilities;
Shadowing supervisor, there were no main changes to the position as time went on.

I would rate this job placement as very good all together.

i would recommend this site placement to other students.
If i could change anything about this placement i would try for more interaction and work with the clients.

16th Annual Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival, Herter Annex UMass Campus

Created graphic ads to publicize each screening, contract appropriate departments, student groups, and media outlets. Compiled background information on films. And prepared screening room, and clean up afterwards. My responsibilities stayed the same throughout my time here.

I rate this placement site as Excellent overall, and would highly recommend it to other students. This internship serves as a wonderful introduction to team-building, problem solving, and grass-roots/unorthodox campaigning.

If i could change one thing about this placement i would have the time better spent on multiple things, rather than having all the focus and attention being spent on one particular aspect.

My advice for other students would be to practice the interview process before being actually interviewed.

Northwestern D.A., Northampton, MA

I was responsible for facilitating presentations to 5th-12th graders on Internet safety and cyber bullying. I performed relevant research and prep work. Attended coalition meetings and worked with high school mentors.
As the job progressed i was able to do more solo presentations.

I would rate this placement as Very good overall, and i would recommend it to other students because you really get to know the legal system , understand recent cases, and get lots of teaching experience. I would not change anything about this job.

The only advice I can give to other students is to explore all the options, there are a lot out there. Find something that fits you really well, even if it doesn't pay, the experience is priceless.

Rawson Brook Farm, Monterey MA

Milk 50 goats, make cheese, garden, care for baby goats, move hay, landscaping, care for bucks, and clean equipment.
I am given more responsibility in the cheese room the longer i worked there. As well as more time with the garden and the goats.

I would rate this placement as excellent in all fields. I would highly recommend this to other students especially due to Susan Sellen being an excellent person to work for.

i would not change one thing about what i did at this placement.

My advice for other students is to get to know the people you work with as they make the experience what it is.

Sikorsky Aircraft, Stratford CT

Primary job responsibilities;
I was part of the Transformation team and worked on several improvement projects that were suggested by senior management and other employees.

I would rate this experience as excellent and would recommend this site to other students because Sikorsky is brimming with opportunities for those who want to learn. Anyone willing to come in and work will appreciate all that Sikorsky has to offer.

I would advise future students to have a strong resume and be able to talk about any aspect of it. If you cant talk about something that is listed on your resume then it shouldn't be there to begin with.

Spirit of Springfield, Springfield MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Inputting data into computer, helping organize events and also execution of events when they occurred. Working on media analysis.

I would rate this experience as very good because the Spirit of Springfield was definitely a learning experience. I feel much more positive about my skills as a professional now having had this internship.

I would not change any aspect of this placement because I was very happy with the experience I had. I learned a lot at this internship and I feel like I will benefit a great deal from it in the future.

To future students I would tell them that as long as they know what major they want to find an internship or co-op in, they will most likely be happy with what the field experience program finds for them. I did not think event planning was a part of communications, but after my internship, I now understand why the two fit so well together.

Sugarloaf Adult Day and Respite Program, Sunderland MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Lead activities, engage people in activities, and take care of program member needs.

I would rate this experience as very good and I would recommend this job placement site to other students because it is a great atmosphere to work and learn in. The small setting allows you to build relationships with program participation.

To future students I would advise them to find something that they're not sure they'll like, internships allow you to experience new things. You may just come across something you'd love to pursue further.

The Scalabrini Center, Cape Town, South Africa

Primary job responsibilities;
Consulting with refugee clients, assisting clients with creating CVS and cover letters, providing individual assistance to clients with employment related services, and job searches.

I would rate this experience as excellent and would recommend this site to other students because I learned a lot in a very professional and supportive atmosphere. Given independence, but there was always someone there to help if needed.

I wish this placement had been more relevant to my major. I was supposed to have more health -related responsibilities, but due to outside factors (like being short staffed) I had to work where I was needed.

To future students I would say that you have yo be very clear about what you want to get out of the placement. Also be willing to take on the responsibility for your own learning objectives.

R.L Migdal Creative Multimedia, Holyoke, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Cleaning and coloring of scanned artwork. Setting up online store. Creating animated advertisements.

I would rate this experience as very good and would recommend this job placement site to other students because it was good experience in the use of programs, in the development of and management of a website, and my supervisor was very professional and helpful.

I would advise future students to be careful and responsible in setting deadlines for yourself, and following through on self-assigned projects on time.

Riverside Industries, Easthampton, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
My main responsibility was to make sure the workers with Intellectual Disability at the Blue Wall were doing their job. This meant co-supervising three adult men as they worked in the food services during the lunch rush. This meant making sure they were wearing gloves, stocking up silverware and napkins, cleaning spills and not cleaning tables where people were sitting. Overall I had an excellent experience because I got to know the men and their different personalities.

I would rate this experience as excellent and would recommend this job placement site to other students who have never had experience being around people with Intellectual Disability because it gave me a chance to know people on a personal level and I never felt like I had to act as an authority figure over them. I had never worked with people with developmental disabilities and this was a very positive experience.

I would advise future students not to settle for their first place they interview for. You may not agree with policy or how things are run, and may end up miserable for a few months. Instead, research various sites and interview with them to decide which is the best for you.

Northwestern District Attorney's Office, Greenfield, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Helping victim/witness advocates complete their assignments such as filling out official paperwork, screening police reports to find cases that will benefit from the efforts of the Victim/Witness unit, and organizing files to distribute to the Victim/Witness advocates. I also met with victims when they need to speak with the prosecutors.

I would rate this experience as excellent because the work is truly gratifying. The advocates have a strong passion for their work and their knowledge and guidance was unbelievable. I would recommend this site to future students because your hands on experience leads you to gain knowledge of the legal system and sociological changes.

To future students I would say to definitely dream big! There are so many opportunities out there, just take your time and look for something fitting. The experience should be rewarding, educational and enjoyable! Keep that in mind when looking for a field experience placement.

Nickerson Public Relations, Wayland, MA

Primary job responsibilities;

Presbyterian Hospital - New York,NY

Primary job responsibilities;
Clinical observation, assisting with group therapy, communicating with assisting patients with different disorders, attending doctor-patient sessions, assisting in emergencies

As soon as staff noted responsibility and interest in interns, they gave us more serious tasks to complete such as participating in clinical emergencies to learn how they are handled.

I would rate this experience as excellent because this has been the best experience of my life. For a student who is passionate for psychology, this is the program I recommend. I would recommend this site to other students because it was a wonderful learning experience for students interested in psych. Also clinical hours are recorded. Will earn up to 240 hours of clinical experience in one summer.

I would advise future students to have patience and expect anything from being an intern.

The Nature Conservancy, Boston, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Planning and organizing for outreach events. Attending events and doing outreach about invasive insects. Leading outreach programs about Asian Long-horned beetle at camp sites.

Over the course of my placement there were changes. The beginning of the summer focused primarily on planning events, whereas at the end of the summer we were analysing the events and planning for future outreach programs.

I would rate this experience as excellent because this is a really fun job and while its focus isn't hard science, I feel that I have gained interpersonal skills that will be helpful in later jobs. I would recommend this site to future students because this is a rewarding job - it allows one to intern with a wide range of people and to make a difference in their understanding of invasive pests.

If I could change anything I might want to have a plan of the whole summer before jumping into the job. It was difficult to not solidify plans until a couple of weeks before they occurred.

To future students I would say that they should find something that they'll be excited about doing every day.

New England Center for Children, Southborough, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Run through all programs on Individualized Education Plan daily. Follow behavior guidelines. Sum data collected for the 3 students I worked with. Follow daily student and classroom schedules.

I would rate my experience as excellent and would recommend this site to other students because it was a great work and learning environment, with many opportunities to gain great experience.

To future students I would say that I enjoyed my field experience placement so much so that I'm very sad to end it. I think its a good idea for students to research the company they want to intern at and even with a new employee from the company to get good advice on how things are and what to expect.

New England Baptist Hospital, Boston, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
My job was to collect data for clinical studies being conducted, enter data, and recruit patients for studies.

I would rate this experience as excellent because I enjoyed my entire time while at the Baptist. I would recommend this site to other students because this internship allowed me to not only get experience with clinical research, but also showed me different aspects with working in a medical setting.

I would not change any part of this internship. I was able to participate in conducting clinical research, interact with patients, and observe the surgeries I studied.

To future students I would have to say to get everything you possibly can out of the experience. Its a great learning tool and a great way to meet people who are in a field of your interest. Take advantage of this rare opportunity.

New England Sports Network (NESN), Watertown, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Producing DVD's for clients highlighting on-air promotions, reconciling daily log times so they match up with correct air times, and distributing "Log Summary Reports" to representative firms.

There were no changes in my primary job responsibilities but there were a variety of tasks. For example, covering the front desk and driving to Fenway Park to drop off tickets for clients.

I would rate this experience as excellent and would recommend it to other students because NESN is an amazing work environment and can give a great experience to those seeking to put a foot in the door of the sporting world.

To future students I would recommend that they apply early for internships and to a broad variety. I applied to well over 20. Also be outgoing and form valuable contacts.

Northfire Recording Studio, Amherst, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Complete lists of activity directors at schools in New York and Massachusetts. I also looked for New England reggae festivals for the Alchemystics to play at. I looked into venues for the Band to play at as well.

I would rate this experience as excellent and I would recommend this site to other students because they give you the experience you need for the real world. It is hard work but you still learn a lot.

To future students I would recommend that they get their paperwork in on time.

I would recommend this site to students because while it is a really small business, it is well run, efficiently organized , and fun to work/learn at.

I would have liked to try having my own consultation with a client but I know that without a degree in interior design that would have been difficult.

I would rate this placement as average and I would recommend this site to other students because anyone who thinks they want to cover sports for a living should intern to see what it is really like. The Gazette is a small paper but does a great job covering high school sports.

I would have liked to cover more games live than writing game wraps based on phone conversations. But overall it was not a bad experience.

To future students I would say that at the Gazette interns work three nights per week. Any student should be prepared to give up their social life for the semester. The internship plus class is a ton of work. But it is worth it if you think sports journalism is the career for you.

I would rate this experience as excellent. There were times when I felt a lack of direction with what I was working on. There were often many projects happening at the same time and I did not know what specific project was a priority for the sales team. I would like to have seen more communication between managers and the interns.

I would recommend this site to other students because it was a very good experience for learning how a small start up company operates. Excellent staff who are supportive and welcoming to your ideas.

Regarding changes to my placement, I would like to see more group meetings with staff members so that assignments could be directed to the sales interns. I felt that I would like to have seen more of a group effort with our sales team. There was often an inconsistency with our sales approach towards clients and leadership was not always apparent among the entire organization.

I wish the assignments has been more challenging.

To future students I would advise that they should definitely do a field experience placement. It gives you good experience and it helps to build your resume.

Amherst Community Television

Primary job responsibilities;
I worked with almost every aspect in this studio that an intern can. I helped to set up and rearrange the studio, directed shoots, worked the cameras, trained on the final cut pro program, edited shoots, and conducted my own shoots outside of the studio.

Over the course of my placement something did change. It wasn't a promotional type of change however. I just switched up my position so that I could learn as much variety as possible.

I would overall rate this experience as very good. Eventually I would like to be able to conduct and film my own interviews, where I am the interviewer for experience in front of the camera. I would recommend this site to other students because ACTV is a great place to be able to experience hands on so you get a feel of the work environment, pace, and expectations in this business.

If I could change any aspect of this placement;

To future students I would advise that you should check with advisors and faculty members for advice about job placement. They probably have knowledge of the oppurtunities out there that you might have missed.

Iowa State University

Primary job responsibilities;
Computational research using various programs on the computer and laboratory research. I was trying to computationally model DNA aptamers, and their binding sites in order for them to act as catalysts.

Over the course of my placement I worked both on the computer and in the lab

I would rate this experience as excellent and would recommend this site to other students because it was a very well organized program. Along with the work, there were fun activities scheduled and the professors were very helpful.

I would advise future students to utilize REU's and internships as they are a great way to learn what you are interested in.

Bristol-Myers Squibb

Primary job responsibilities;
Executions of performance qualification testing on the stem-in-place system. Data analysis of PQ testing data and presentation of data packages.

I would rate this job placement as excellent and I would reccomend this site to other students because the job enlists great people, and their is plenty of hard work to be completed.

If I could change this placement I would make it longer without interrupting school.

I would advise students to accept job placements even if it delays graduation.

Millitech Inc.; Northampton, MA

The primary job responsibilities;

To perform analysis and implementation of software for production products and web presence. Computer simulations in CAD were also a responsibility requiring me to learn a valuable tool relevant to the industry.

My responsiblities at this job changed over the course of my placement;
At first i was closely supervised with hardware and asked to do software tutorials for a possible upcoming project but was later allowed to design utilities and trusted to perform calculations

I would rate this overall experience as excellent and I would recommened this site to other students because it is a very well staffed engineering firm that despite appearances leads the industry in this field. Any chance to work here is a valuable oppurtunity to learn from talented people.

The only thing I would change about this placement was the amount of hands of work with relevant hardware though considering the cost of mistakes in this field I feel my experience was more than adequate in this regard.

To future students pursuing field placement I would advise gettting a ham radio license. It shows interest, aptitude, and respect for this complex field.

I would rate the overall field placement site as "Excellent - Very good".

I would highly recommend this site to other students. Pratt & Whitney has a lot of opportunities for students of a variety of majors besides engineering. It has a lot of different locations like Connecticut, California and Florida.
I would have like to have had more exposure or tours to different departments in the company to get a good feeling of how the company works as a whole.

My advice for other students pursuing a field experience placement in the future I recommend;

There were not many changes besides office work for what was expected of me.
I would rate this field placement as "Very good" overall, with the challenging assignments and large amounts of learning as "excellent".
I would certainly recommend this site to other students. An important reason of my recommendation is due to the large amounts of hands on experience you can receive.
If there was one thing I could have changed, it may have been the location, the area was not well suited for the store.
I recommend that everyone start looking for an internship early.

WHDH-TV; Boston, MA

The primary job responsibilities require finding story ideas, setting up interviews, assisting with interviews, logging tapes, assisting writing packages, pulling tapes from the library, ect.
The majority of the job stayed the same, yet towards the end of the internship I was able to assist more in the writing process.
For the overall evaluation of the internship i would rate it as excellent. The only thing i would change about the internship would be to have more responsibilities, with slightly more challenging assaignments.
I would highly reccomend this site to other students. Being able to go out in th feild with the producer and experiencing real reporting is a great thing to see first hand.
I strongly advise students to participate in campus resources such as UVC and the Daily Collegian.

The primary job responsibilities include planning, compliance and audit work.
There were no changes in the job requirements as the year progressed.
I would rate the feild placement at excellent in all categories.

This site provided a relevant and challenging experience and i would highly reccomend it to others.
If there was one thing i could change it would have to do with the large amounts of driving.

i would reccomend a smaller firm like AAF to get a wider range of experience.

New England Wire Products; Fitchburg, MA

Primary job responsibilities involving assembly of wire racks, and running the ghraphics printer. Over the course of the year there was not a large variant of what had to be done.

Overall the field placement of this job is very good to average.

Recommended for other students, mainly for the experience of hands on work such as welding which comes in handy for designing in the future.
If there was one thing that could have been different about this job, it would have been nice to have worked on more "Engineering" work such as drawing.

This is a valuable experience to have, it is a nice thing to have done.

May Institute (The); Randolph, MA

Spring 2009

I was to familiarize myself with clients by reading their individual service plans and files. I observed staff work one-on-one with the clients and then would take time to work one-on-one with them.

My advice to students looking to pursue a field placement in the future would be to make sure that you are enthusiastic about your experience and the prospect of learning new things. This works to raise your morale and to demonstrate that you'd be a good candidate for an internship or permanent position with the particular company.
