i would rate this placement as an overall very good experience, and i would recommend it to other students. It is a comfortable job and an open work environment. it is a great work opportunity and you can learn a large amount for web development.
if i could change one thing i would like to have been able to have seen all the aspects of the web development.

-carry out planned experiments from start to finish
-media preparation
-Cell bank thawing
-taking cultures
-do purification in spare time
There were no changes in my primary job responsibilities while working here.
This field placement could be rated between excellent and very good. Cell Cultures tended to be more on the biochemistry side, and i didn't get to use the advanced engineering courses much. I would certainly recommend this site for other students. Working at Abbott was a good learning experience. Abbott is a leader in biotechnology and a great place to work.
If i could change anything, i would have like to have been closer to the placement, i had to drive over an hour every day to and from work.
My piece of advice is to make a good resume.

if i could change anything about this placement i would like more control over my projects.
My advice is to research the company find out what they will be expecting of you. Make sure that this is what you want to do before hand is better than finding out your responsibilities and wanting to leave.

CBS Radio WZLX/WODS, Brighton MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Audio production, show preparation and research, organizational work, creation and management of morning show elements and features, writing for comedy main bit (acting, writing, producing, archiving)

I was sent on loan to WODS to help produce their morning show

I would rate this experience as excellent and I would recommend this site to other students because if you want a real hands-on experience, WZLX/CBS Radio is an excellent site.

To future students I would advise them to learn all they can while they're there, even if it doesn't seem interesting or seems to difficult. Also don't be afraid to make yourself know while interning. "Hello's" go a long way.

CBS News, Springfield, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Editing video, helping reporters obtain footage, write smaller local stories

I would rate my experience as excellent and I would recommend this job to students because CBS let me do so much work, especially with expensive equipment.

This internship is located in Springfield, MA which may be a long commute for some.

To future students I would advise them to try and work where you'll get the most hands on experience.

Center for Student Businesses, UMass Campus

Primary job responsibilities;
Consulting for student run business, People's Market. This includes being responsible for documentation and timely reporting of financial figures, attending mandatory meetings, prepare budgets for business, and communicate between business and the university.

I would my experience as excellent and I would recommend this site to other students because it gives you real experience in running a business. I was given more responsibility and freedom than I had expected which was great!

To future students I would advise that any real world field experience is much more beneficial than classroom knowledge. Interaction with people in the business and approaching real life problems will give you a great advantage over your peers when you are competing for jobs.

Clarke School for Hearing and Speech, Northampton MA

Assistant teacher in the preschool. Assist teachers in set up, clean up, and read to children a couple of times a month. Maintain weekly journal and complete final paper.

I would rate this experience as excellent and I would recommend this site to other students.

To future students I would persuade them to do their field work at Clarke because it was an amazing hands on experience that opened many doors for me. I ended up applying to the Smith/Clarke MED graduate program and got accepted. I start in June and will be getting my certificate of teacher of the deaf upon completion.

CampusLive, Boston, MA, Amherst, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Lead sales generator, manage client database, develop new marketing and sales strategies, write a sales protocol, schedule meetings with clients, network with university programming and other organizations

I was eventually working on the business plan for CampusLive. This involved an executive summary and constructing financial statements that could be used for angel investments and other funding sources. TIC America is the next competition.

I would rate this experience as excellent. There were times when I felt a lack of direction with what I was working on. There were often many projects happening at the same time and I did not know what specific project was a priority for the sales team. I would like to have seen more communication between managers and the interns.

I would recommend this site to other students because it was a very good experience for learning how a small start up company operates. Excellent staff who are supportive and welcoming to your ideas.

Regarding changes to my placement, I would like to see more group meetings with staff members so that assignments could be directed to the sales interns. I felt that I would like to have seen more of a group effort with our sales team. There was often an inconsistency with our sales approach towards clients and leadership was not always apparent among the entire organization.

To future students I would advise them to not be afraid to challenge the companies employees with their own ideas. Don't be afraid to stand up to the current business strategy and try new approaches to your job.

Baystate Medical Center, Springfield MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Write and edit press releases, media advisories and story pitches for potential placement in local TV and print media. Escort media when on Baystate grounds.

Over the course of my placement there was less media advisory and press release writing and more story pitches.

I would rate my experience as very good and I would recommend this site to other students because it is good exposure to the daily press demands of a large organization.

If I could change anything about this placement I would have more daily press releases and media advisory writing. This aspect of the job tailed off towards the end of the semester.

To future students I would advise them to get a clear sense of the jobs duties and expectations beforehand. Talk to someone who has interned (or worked) at the company. Ask lots of questions!

Boston Casting, Boston MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Data entry, answering phones, replying to emails, managing auditions, paper work, filing.

Over time I gained more managing responsibilities of auditions and individual projects.

To future students I would say that an internship is truly a great way to preview whats to come. Take as much as you can from your experiences and always ask questions!

Bayfield Farm, Williston FL

Primary job responsibilities;
Care of horses, handling youngstock, riding, feeding, etc..

I would rate my experience as excellent, although it would be unlikely for them to hire anyone else from UMass because they wouldn't know them. It is a fun experience where I learned a ton it is just an opportunity that isn't open to many people.

To future students I would advise them to make sure you have decent living arrangements, and to make sure you know the details of your schedule and job description.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Data entry and collection. Help with groups at the PREP Program. Office work

I would rate my experience as excellent and I would recommend this site to other students because it offers great opportunities to gain further knowledge about future career options.

Boston Biochem Inc., Cambridge, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Main responsibility included expressing recombinant proteins to be purified, preparing plasmid DNA by midiprep, maintaining a scientific notebook, writing reports to be used as a reference for later experiments, as well as some work with the protein purification by FPLC. Other responsibilities included aliquoting products for sale, taking inventory of equipment, reagents, and products, and work on the company website.

Over the course of my placement, I was given larger and higher priority assignments including collaborating with senior scientists and working on contract projects.

I would rate this overall experience as excellent and I would recommend this site to other students.

I would have liked to have conducted a wider variety of experiments. Also I would have liked to have learned more about how the business was run.

To future students I would advise them to start looking for openings early around December/January, because all of the large companies that hire Interns have early deadlines. Also, apply to the MLSC Internship challenge if they are in life sciences.

Bristol-Myers Squibb; Devens, MA

Primary job responsibilities;

Updating and dating parameters for cleaning and steaming circuits for GEP/GMP/PQ. Using Auto-CAD to represent CIP/SIP circuits for site. Identifying and labeling worst case locations in CIP systems for sampling.

Because the company is still in start-up every couple of weeks I would get a new project/assignment to work on.

I would rate this experience as excellent, and I would recommend this site to other students because there is so much to learn and every person on site wants to help you.

To future students I would advise you to go for it! It can only help your education and chances of employment.

ABC 40

Primary job responsibilities;
To assist reporters/news room staff and help assignment desk.

I would rate this experience as very good and I would recommend this site to other students because it was a good experience for someone looking to have a career in broadcast news.

To future students I would advise that they should not be afraid to ask for things to do at their placements.

Abbott Bioresearch Center; Worcester, MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Assist in cell culture research by designing experiments. Make medium and inoculate cell cultures into bio reactors. Perform purification techniques.

I would rate my experience as excellent and I would recommend this site to other students because my supervisor was great, she was very helpful and easy to work with and learn from. I think that since I spent 7 months there I got to learn so much and really experience what it would be like to work there.

To future students I would highly recommend doing a co-op. It builds on what you learn in class into using what you've learned into practice.

Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce

Primary job responsibilities;
answering phones, meeting and greeting guests, updating website listings, putting together packets, assisting with events, general office work, and various projects.

I would rate this experience as average and I would recommend it to other students because it is good experience, but I don't recommend it full time because you can get the same benefits doing it part time.

I wish the assignments has been more challenging.

To future students I would advise that they should definitely do a field experience placement. It gives you good experience and it helps to build your resume.

Amherst Community Television

Primary job responsibilities;
I worked with almost every aspect in this studio that an intern can. I helped to set up and rearrange the studio, directed shoots, worked the cameras, trained on the final cut pro program, edited shoots, and conducted my own shoots outside of the studio.

Over the course of my placement something did change. It wasn't a promotional type of change however. I just switched up my position so that I could learn as much variety as possible.

I would overall rate this experience as very good. Eventually I would like to be able to conduct and film my own interviews, where I am the interviewer for experience in front of the camera. I would recommend this site to other students because ACTV is a great place to be able to experience hands on so you get a feel of the work environment, pace, and expectations in this business.

If I could change any aspect of this placement;
The programs that I helped to film all revolve around political matters such as town meetings and school board meetings. I would love to be able to work with news reporting stories and working with that preparation.

To future students I would say make sure yo have an idea of what you want to gain so that you stay focused and motivated even when you are not receiving pay. The more you want going in the more you will benefit from the experience.

Anheuser-Busch; St. Louis, MO

Primary job responsibilities;
To manage 8-14 brewers on shift including pass on, assignment delegation, and guidance. To conduct daily production meetings with senior management. To troubleshoot various process issues by using trends, reports, and working with personnel. To train in all areas of brewing, even off shift

I would rate this experience as excellent and because my work was 85-90% management I would have liked to have used a little more engineering work related to my major. I would recommend this site to other students because it is a good atmosphere and you learn a lot. Also for a co-op the company gives you a lot of responsibility so you learn quickly.

To future students I would advise them to keep an open mind, it can/will be a great experience even if you don't like it, it will help you decide what you want to do. Also its a good way to network and maybe get a job offer.

Artspromo; Shutesbury, MA

Primary Job Responsibilities;
Managing Social media assets for clients, press release distributions, and multimedia packaging.

I would rate this job experience as excellent and I would recommend it to other students because Jaime(my supervisor) is a great person to work with. The atmosphere at the company is laid back and fun, and everyone really plays to the students strengths.

Amherst Community TV

Primary Job Responsibilities;

I was responsible for helping members check out equipment and answer the phone at the station and answer any questions members/potential members may have had.

Over the course of my placement I became more comfortable with the equipment and therefore I was more capable to do shoots without supervision.

I would rate this experience as very good and I would recommend this site to other students because it provides a hands on experience and a chance to learn the inner workings of studio shoots as well as shooting on location.

If I could change anything about this internship I would have wanted to do less filming of government events and a chance to do more creative and less structured filming's.

To future students I would advise that if they are interested in being behind a camera then this is a great opportunity to get comfortable with equipment as well as editing software.

I would rate this job placement as excellent and I would reccomend this site to other students because the job enlists great people, and their is plenty of hard work to be completed.

If I could change this placement I would make it longer without interrupting school.

I would advise students to accept job placements even if it delays graduation.

Millitech Inc.; Northampton, MA

The primary job responsibilities;

To perform analysis and implementation of software for production products and web presence. Computer simulations in CAD were also a responsibility requiring me to learn a valuable tool relevant to the industry.

My responsiblities at this job changed over the course of my placement;
At first i was closely supervised with hardware and asked to do software tutorials for a possible upcoming project but was later allowed to design utilities and trusted to perform calculations

I would rate this overall experience as excellent and I would recommened this site to other students because it is a very well staffed engineering firm that despite appearances leads the industry in this field. Any chance to work here is a valuable oppurtunity to learn from talented people.

The only thing I would change about this placement was the amount of hands of work with relevant hardware though considering the cost of mistakes in this field I feel my experience was more than adequate in this regard.

To future students pursuing field placement I would advise gettting a ham radio license. It shows interest, aptitude, and respect for this complex field.

I would highly recommend this site to other students. Pratt & Whitney has a lot of opportunities for students of a variety of majors besides engineering. It has a lot of different locations like Connecticut, California and Florida.

I would certainly recommend this site to other students. An important reason of my recommendation is due to the large amounts of hands on experience you can receive.

I would rate the feild placement at excellent in all categories.

This site provided a relevant and challenging experience and i would highly reccomend it to others.

i would reccomend a smaller firm like AAF to get a wider range of experience.

New England Wire Products; Fitchburg, MA

Primary job responsibilities involving assembly of wire racks, and running the ghraphics printer. Over the course of the year there was not a large variant of what had to be done.

Overall the field placement of this job is very good to average.

Recommended for other students, mainly for the experience of hands on work such as welding which comes in handy for designing in the future.
If there was one thing that could have been different about this job, it would have been nice to have worked on more "Engineering" work such as drawing.

This is a valuable experience to have, it is a nice thing to have done.
