The Daily Hampshire Gazette, Northhampton MA

Primary job responsibilities;
Answer phone calls from high school coaches and write game summaries and box scores from the games. One night per week I was responsible for the "Scoreboard" page (the page with the box scores and stats from the professional leagues).

I would rate this placement as average and I would recommend this site to other students because anyone who thinks they want to cover sports for a living should intern to see what it is really like. The Gazette is a small paper but does a great job covering high school sports.

I would have liked to cover more games live than writing game wraps based on phone conversations. But overall it was not a bad experience.

To future students I would say that at the Gazette interns work three nights per week. Any student should be prepared to give up their social life for the semester. The internship plus class is a ton of work. But it is worth it if you think sports journalism is the career for you.
