Berrett Koehler Publishing; San Francisco, CA

Summer 2009 (San Francisco, Ca)

*Reading and responding to incoming book proposals
*Reading and revising contracted material,
*Copy editing,
*Creating tip sheets,
*Registering

I was given more responsibility as the summer progressed. i.e.more important, more substantial projects.

Berett Koehler is a unique company which works really hard to ensure that its interns have a great learning experience.

I would suggest students considering pursuing a field experience placement in the future, to be innovative, and take initiative whenever you get the opportunity.

Positives- wrote short blurbs and CD reviews and got to see my writing published in the paper each week. I got to write in the newsroom and received equal treatment in the editing of my work. Great!

Negatives- It's hard to learn from editors when their egos aren't in check due to an overabundance of time spent giving his all-knowing two-cents (putting down local music and politics) and writing dreary, bloated, philosophical crap each week. For other editors, the super-cool lax attitude doesn't work all the time, bro...not when you're responsible for teaching someone how to be an assertive go-getter journalist. If I had been trained better on the InCopy computer program, and if I had been encouraged to contribute story ideas of my own, then maybe I would credit this internship as worthy, and maybe I would've received the letter of recommendation which I was PROMISED but still never received.

My advice: Don't get all buddy buddy with these people. Do your work and have some initiative, and you'll easily be more productive than the people who work there full-time.
"Loose" would be an understatement to describe the final portion of the semester. Less work was given to me and my time was being severely wasted. What they basically did during my semester was hire twice as many interns to fill the void of an editor who just left. The work wasn't even split up evenly.

In summary, if you want to be cool and act like the Authority of Northampton- join up. If you want to be the man who deems your garage band "lame" or "cool"- apply within. If you want to be a journalist- go next door to the Gazette.
