Amherst Media; Amherst, MA

Job Responsibilities:

  • Updating blogs, Twitter, and Facebook

  • Build PowerPoints for new interns

  • Other various projects

There were minor to no changes to my responsibilities during my placement.

I would rate this placement as very good.

I would definitely recommend this company. The networking is a tremendous asset for when you graduate.

There is little change I would make to this placement such as better communication with my supervisors and hear any criticisms they may have for me.

Advice I would give students is to never fear anything and keep in mind that you need to treat it like a real job no matter the compensation.

Amherst Media; Amherst, MA

Job Responsibilities:

  • Operating studio cameras during shoots

  • Studio control room, camera switching, audio controls

  • Editing footage

  • Front desk reception, answering phones

There were minor changes while I was at my placement. I began doing more studio work but later transitioned into more editing. Also, I became involved in an intern produced show.

I would rate this experience as average.

I would recommend this company because it is local and offers work study pay. Also, it is a fun environment and will inform participants about the surrounding Amherst community.

If I were to change to any aspect of this placement, I would ask for more complex and challenging tasks, more structured activities and also more work with close supervision by the staff.

Advice I would give other students, would be to become assertive and ask for work to make it clear that you want to become more involved.

Infinity Pharmaceuticals; Cambridge, MA

My main responsibilities remained the same throughout my placement.

Overall I would evaluate this company as excellent.

I would recommend this company to other students because of the warm, friendly atmosphere and it was also conducive to my learning.

However if I were to change one thing it would be to have more direct chemistry labwork.

My advice to students would be to search early and apply to places even if you think you are not qualified. Also, I would live in a sublet apartment if the company can not provide housing.

Center for Student Businesses, UMass Campus

Job responsibilities;

This was a very good field placement and I think other students would like to try it for its great learning environment. I would not change a thing about this placement.

State House; Boston, MA

I interned as a legislative/press intern. I wrote letters to constituents and compiled daily press clippings. I also attended hearings and events. As time passed I even got to help write up speeches and columns.

I learned so much interning here and was able to work directly with government. I wouldn't change a thing about my experience here.

One piece of advice for anyone looking for an internship would be to look out for field experience in e-recruiting because there are so many opportunities.

Northfire Recording Studio; Amherst, MA

As an intern at Northfire, my main responsibilities were:
  • general cleaning
  • taking care of clients minor needs (drinks & food)
  • learning the equipment (microphone stands, different wires, baffles)
  • and how to set them all up
I really enjoyed interning here. This internship taught me about what I'm interested in learning more than any other previous experience. The faculty is extremely helpful as long as you show the desire to learn. The only thing I would change is that my assignments were more challenging at times, but overall I had an excellent experience. Highly recommended internship.

Amherst Media; Amherst, MA

Interning at Amherst Media I was responsible for recording and editing various events in and around Amherst to be shown on ACTV.

My overall experience here was excellent. I really enjoyed the work environment as well as the challenge of my assignments. This internship was very relevant to my communications major and I would definitely recommend this to future students.

My advice to all students would be to apply no matter what, even if you think you may not have all the qualifications; take chances!

Market Street Research; Northampton, MA

Working at Market Street Research I was able to correspond with prospective clients and arrange for initial phone conversations with my boss.

My overall experience was excellent and I was extremely satisfied with this internship. It was a great atmosphere with a wonderful and helpful staff. My advice for future students would be to ask as many questions as possible, be social and get to know your co-workers, and keep in touch after the internship ends in order to keep connections.

I would definitely recommend this internship to future students and would suspect them to enjoy it as much as I did.

Genzyme Corporation; Framingham, MA

Working at Genzyme, I was responsible for human and mouse cell cultures, invitro tumor modeling, completion of reports on data, and testing of compounds both invitro and invivo.

I would recommend this job to students who are seriously interested in working in industry and that are comfortable working with animals. Although I would have liked to have more responsibilities within the company, my overall experience was very good and I learned a lot. The atmosphere and work environment were also very comfortable.

New England Aquarium; Quincy, MA

Working at the aquarium I was responsible for:

  • Feeding

  • Cleaning

I found this job to be very relevant to my major. I got a really good feel for it and would recommend this job to anyone who is really passionate about furthering their career in animal science and similar majors. My overall experience and satisfaction with the job was very good and I would definitely recommend pursuing such an internship.
