NxStage Medical Inc; Lawrence, MA

Job Responsibilities:
  • Assisting senior engineers in various projects
  • Performing Testing
  • Machining and designing of various components used in dialysis machines
Overall this was a very good placement because it gives a great industrial exposure and hands on experience. I would recommend this site to other students.

My advice to others pursuing a field experience placement in the future would be to take the benefits of all the services provided by Umass Career Services. It helps!

Walt Disney World; Orlando, FL

Job Responsibilities:
  • Vending Food

  • Paperwork documentation
  • Computer entries
Over time I went from vending to backstage and providing cart inventory.
Overall this was an excellent placement and I would recommend it to others because you learn so much about yourself.

St. Luke's House Inc.; Bethesda, MD

My particular position with St. Luke's House was in the Life Skills Program. This particular program works on a class basis in which the mental health patients participate in a number of groups including cooking, reading, computer training, fitness, recovery planning, current events, gardening, and more. My role was to assist both the clients and my supervising counselors by any means necessary while all along learning as much as I can about the particular mental health disorders highlighted at St. Luke's House (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder).

Overall I would rate my placement as excellent and would not change anything about it.

I would highly recommend this site to other students because working at St. Luke's House is the ultimate experience for someone who is trying to become more involved in the mental health field. The direct patient interaction serves as an invaluable experience as many do not get the chance to have this. As an aspiring therapist, I have learned a great deal about helping people who are mentally unwell, and also helping those who are healthy. It was extremely beneficial to have a number of counselors contributing different points of view for the same ultimate goal, which is helping these patients in their recovery and assisting acclimating them back into society.

MSM Protein Technologies Inc.; Medford, MA

I worked in the cancer research lab helping my mentors with various experiments and planning of experiments. I analyzed experimental data, conducted several experiments on my own, and learned about several different processes.
I would rate this internship as average in most areas and would recommend it to other students because it was a great stepping stone from university to real life research. They threw me in the water when I first arrived at the program but I am glad they did. It pushed me to figure things out on my own.
The only thing I would change was that there was a slight language barrier because most of the individuals at the company speak Russian as their primary language. Although I speak Russian, having my education all in English made it a bit difficult at times to understand exactly what was going on at a molecular basis. Understanding someone in another language was difficult at times and some questions were left unanswered due to the language barrier.

I think it is very useful because you learn things that you would not just by attending classes and employers like to see that you have had hands-on experience.

3 Rings Films; Northampton, MA

The primary job responsibilities for me were to;

My responsibilities advanced over the course of this internship. Initially transcribing was my main task but over time we were given the chance to edit scenes and more.

This placement was Very good overall and I recommend that other students try it if they are interested. It was a good experience working with a person trying to get funding for his work and producing it for the public. I was able to see a behind the scenes aspect of the networking and all of the hard work involved. If I could change one thing about this internship, I would have liked more attention to work schedules.

Over time I had more interaction with students. During their classes I would help them with their work and I also joined them playing board games at the end of the day.

Over all my experience was in need of improvement. I would not recommend other students to this site because there was a lack of organization and there were no concrete job responsibilities. I felt as though I was not an important part of the staff and I also felt ignored at times. These would be things I would change about the internship.

Western Mass Pioneers; Ludlow, MA

My main working responsibilities were to work at public events and marketing for the team. As well as grounds preparation for the upcoming season.

There were no real changes to the work responsibilities as time went on. I think this placement was excellent overall, and I would strongly recommend it to other students. My primary job responsibilities at the White House were to assist in daily logistical operations to support the White house office and staff. I consider this placement as a very good to excellent placement in most fields and i would recommend it to other students as it is a one of a kind internship in the White House. There is no other place on earth that can give a more inside look at the world of politics and how the federal government works.

If I could change one thing about the placement, I would have been placed into my field of Policies, rather than management and administration since it is not my main area of practice.

My advice to other students is to just apply for jobs! you never know when you might just get what you looking for.
