Sustainability Initiative (UMass);Amherst, MA

My primary responsibilities were to coordinate with the student government on sustainability issues on campus. This would include writing legislature or just educating the student representatives on sustainability issues. I also worked to create a unified mechanism through which students from around campus can easily be involved with any of the numerous opportunities available on campus in the sustainability field.

This was definitely an excellent placement and i would strongly recommend it to other students in the future. Even if I had the opportunity, I would not change anything about this placement.

My advice to other students is to be aggressive early and to apply to as many opportunities as you can.

The Literacy Project; Ware, MA

My job was to tutor students in Algebra and essay writing, assist my supervisor and lead some lesson plans.

This was an excellent placement and I strongly recommend it to other students. I think the work environment is great for college students, fun but also a great learning experience. I wish the drive was not as far.

My advice is to contact Margaret Anderson the volunteer coordinator.

WGGB-TV; Springfield, MA

I was to assist reporters, photographers and producers in the news gathering and editing process. There were no real changes to those responsibilities.

I think this placement is somewhere between an excellent and very good placement and I recommend it to other students. This placement provides hands on experience of what broadcast journalism is really like. Not to mention the very nice people you work with. If I could have changed one thing about this placement, I would have liked more instructions on what they wanted me to do.

My advice to others is to get experience earlier in college, start getting placements sophomore year.

Arts Promo; Shutesbury, MA

My responsibilities for Artspromo were to help market clients using viral strategies. This included updating their viral assets (facebook, myspace, twitter, tumblr, youtube, etc.) as well as their web pages. I was often assigned to problem solving situations since that was is my strong point.

Overall I think this placement was excellent and I would definitely recommend it to other students. The boss is great and she can teach you a lot but it is fun at the same time. I would not change anything about this placement.

My advice is to apply to a lot of internships.

Overall I think this placement was a very good experience and I would recommend it to other students since it is a great experience with film. It is also an excellent opportunity to watch films you usually wouldn't see and you are able to meet some excellent film makers. Even if I had the opportunity, I would not change anything about this placement.

My one piece of advice for student is, don't hold back, don't be afraid to get involved in on campus activities.

Youth Action Coalition; Amherst, MA

At this placement I was responsible for editing grant proposal, evaluating programs, observing, interviewing and writing up field notes. The last 20 hours were solely observing and field notes.

I think this is an average to very good placement and recommend it to someone that could be an advisor/ intern in the programs and be sure to regularly attend events. If I could change one thing about this placement is to reduce the required time at events of unusual times.

I definitely advise taking an internship if you have the chance.

Since they would be interested in topics Jhally discusses in his class, it brings together learning and knowledge from the classroom with practical work skills.
If I could have changed anything about this placement I would have liked to have had the opportunity to learn skills in production as well.

My advice for other students in the future is that if there is no salary or stipend, try to find placements in the area. There are plenty of wonderful organizations in the Amherst and Northampton areas.

Student Legal Services (UMASS); Amherst, MA

My job responsibilities were sitting in on client meetings with attorneys to take notes, scheduling appointments with the caseload of clients, and filling in for receptionists roughly 2-3 hours per week. Throughout the course of my internship there were no real changes in my duties.

I would rate this internship as very good overall.

I would recommend this site to other students because it was a great opportunity to learn a lot about the law in a career format that caters to students that have very little exposure to the law from previous experiences.

If I could change something about my internship I would have liked to have written more demand letters or I would have liked to have gone to court with my clients.
